Well, I for one can see a gaim-plugin being developed pretty quickly.
Actually, a diNovo fork of guifications.sf.net shouldn't be that hard.

Competing with that will probably be an xmms-plugin and a rhythmbox-plugin.

Also, a plugin for Evolution 2.0 will probably be worked on pretty soon as well.

Hopefully, those will all talk to a diNovo LCD-Manager so that different information from different applications can be displayed at the same time. But this is, of course, only speculations.

With risk of being too optimistic, I hope for this to be stable enough to be adapted by Gnome 3.0.
